Having been a DJ for over thirteen years and a wedding DJ for the last four of those thirteen, I’ve noticed a trend with first dance song choices. John Legend’s “All Of Me”, Hunter Hayes’ “Wanted”, and Ed Sheeran’s “Thinking Out Loud” along with classics like Nat King Cole’s “Unforgettable” and Etta James’ “At Last” usually top the list.
Though I always recommend couples choose a song that is special and unique to them and their relationship, with the couples that are open to it, I often suggest some lesser-known first dance song options that give a more unique experience for the two of them and their guests.
These five options top my personal list of first dance songs that slipped through the mainstream wedding filters:
1. Celine Dion’s “Incredible”:
For all of Celine Dion’s fame, this song by her with a feature by Ne-Yo never received wide distribution. Regardless the song’s lyrics are perfect for the first dance of the night.
2. Adele’s “Remedy”:
Adele’s latest album (which “Remedy” is from) is without doubt a knockout. However, “Sweetest Devotion” seems to have gained the majority of the attention. For fans of Adele, “Remedy” is a beautifully written choice for couples to dance to—especially if there’s been hardship in their pasts.
3. Ed Sheeran “Kiss Me”:
You can’t go wrong with Ed Sheeran. Like Adele’s “Sweetest Devotion”, Ed Sheeran’s “Thinking Out Loud” seems to have taken most of the fame while some other great hits have sat on the sidelines. One of those is “Kiss Me”. It’s a passionate acoustic-driven choice for a first dance that will inevitably intensify the energy in the room.
4. John Legend’s “You & I (Nobody In The World)“:
This hit by John Legend is said to have been written to his wife. The lyrics fit the day of a wedding perfectly.
5. John Mayer’s “XO”:
For this one, I can’t take the credit; an amazing couple I’m working with on their upcoming wedding requested this for their first song and I immediately fell in love with it. John Mayer’s indelible voice over an acoustic guitar makes this a beautiful rendition of the original version by Beyonce.
